Aalesunds Museum

A peep into the past.

The permanent displays at Aalesunds Museum are devoted to various aspects of the town in its dual capacity as a fishing, sealing and shipping port of the commercial and industrial centre of Sunnmøre.
Key events in the towns history, among them the fire of  1904 and the German occupation of 1940-45, are also accorded the place due to them.
Nor has the fact that the museum is located in the heart of Norway’s premier Jugendstil town been forgotten: a whole room is devoted to central features of the Ålesund variant of this highly decorative architectural style.

The barn

The oldest building in the centre of Ålesund, a barn dating back to before 1812, also stands in the grounds. Part of the interior has been converted into an old-style grocers shop of the kind so common in the town until quite recently.

Brudeegget

The white pearl of Norwegian shipping history.

On show in the grounds is one of Norway’s first decked lifeboat. It was in such a craft the Captain Ole Brude and his crew made a historic five-month-long crossing of the North Atlantic in 1904-1905.

Brudeegget - "The egg" that crossed the Atlantic

Book no. 29
The English-language book about "Uræd" tells the story of Ole Brude and his crew, on the strenuous journey across the Atlantic. The book contains copies of original documents, and is packed with great photos. You will also find the book in stock in Washington, thereby saving you expensive shipping over "the pond". A great gift for English-speaking friends and acquaintances!
