City Glance

The environmental exhibits cast a look back at some of the city's service and business occupations. The exhibitions take you straight into the atmosphere from the 1920s onwards to the 1960s. Here you will meet the dentist, the photographer, the shoemaker, the hairdresser and the colonial shop. Not least, one can see the town lady's selection of headdresses from the great hat era 100 years ago. Everything in the exhibits in detailed structure.

You'll see a detailed reconstruction of the different workplaces.

The hair salon

The town's first barber with craft letters was Ludvig Andersen. He established the salon in 1856. He probably had a few good years before there was competition from barber and wig maker Andreas Andersen in 1863. Nicoline Danielsen from Ålesund was the country's first female barber and was succeeded around the 20th century by Kristianne Wolstad and Rakel Rasmussen.

The Photographer

For 58 years — from 1919 to 1977, there was a photographer Giske in Notenesgata 12. The founder was Peder Giske who lasted until 1964 and was succeeded by his son Konrad. Konrad left his entire fully equipped studio to Aalesunds Museum where it stands as one of the oldest intact photo studios in the country.

Dental office

Dentist Leif Løvmo from Elverum established the dental office in Ålesund in 1917. Most of this exhibition is given by his son dentist Narve Løvmo, who practiced from 1954 to 1999.

In the exhibition you can also see paintings from 1918, painted by Jonas Peson. They hung in his office both Kongens gate 4 and later in Kipervikgata 13.

The Shoemaker

The town's first shoemaker Henrik Meclenburg established business in Kirkegata in 1848. For the next 25 years, he received fierce competition as 62 others sparked citizenship in this profession. In 1906, the shoemaker friends obtained a collective agreement. It triggered a two-year contract with the employers for a weekly wage of NOK 18.

Hat-fashion

The hats on display are taken from the shop “Modes” which was located in Notenesgata in Ålesund. “Modes” was a specialist shop for women's hats and was established around 1920. The proprietor was Mrs. Sigrid Fjørtoft who was a trained modist. That she was skilled you can see from the hats that are hand-sewn by her.

The Colonial Shop

The items in the store are composed of many donors and reflect a time period from the 1920s onwards. In the exhibition you will find items produced in Ålesund, among other things. The showroom is located in The Barn, the oldest building in the city. Ask at the reception about viewing.
